NEW! 2008-2009 Course Description Guide in PDF
The Program...
Elkhart Central High School has a comprehensive, state-of-the-art curriculum based on the trimester system. Students have a wide selection of courses from which to choose in order to prepare for post-secondary institutions, vocational training, and on-the-job employment. All students complete a four year planning guide. Students are required to complete 40 credits for General Diploma or a Core 40 Diploma and 47 credits for the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma.
The Community...
The combination of three townships, the City of Elkhart, and the small town of Bristol, Indiana make up the Elkhart Central High School Community. Located on the "Main Street of the Midwest," more contemporarily known as the Indiana Toll Road, the cosmopolitan cities of Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis are between 90 to 150 miles away. The combined Elkhart/Goshen/South Bend/Mishawaka metro area has a population slightly larger than 650,000; our school district makes up approximately 60,000 of that number.
Elkhart Central High School's enrollment for 2007-2008 is projected at 1,800+. Two airports, Elkhart Municipal in Elkhart and the South Bend Regional Airport service both communities. Elkhart Municipal hosts many airshows, flying lessons and functions primarily for corporate and private pilots/planes. South Bend Regional Airport (SBN) is less than 30 minutes away and provides services by major carriers to and from national and international airports. For those who prefer travel by land, Amtrak provides passenger transportation to most cities in the United States. Norfolk-Southern’s Robert Young railroad yard is the largest "single-hump" classification system in the United States.
Industry has long been the backbone of Elkhart's economy. Mobile home, van conversion, and recreational vehicle manufacturing companies and the numerous suppliers, have made Elkhart the world's producer in the field. Prior to World War II, over 200 automobile and truck models were manufactured locally. Presently, AM General in Mishawaka holds a contract with the American military to mass produce the famous Hummer, used in wartime and as a personal vehicle. It also produces the new H2 Hummer. A wide assortment of other industries such as pharmaceuticals, musical instruments, electronics, cardboard containers, a growing service base, and miscellaneous small businesses add dimension to our diverse economy.
One of the greatest assets to the area is its access to nine post-secondary institutions. Among them are Goshen College, Indiana University at South Bend (with an extension in Elkhart), Ivy Tech College, Bethel College, Holy Cross Junior College, Vincennes University, St. Mary's College and the renowned University of Notre Dame.
The culmination of our educational, economic, and cultural benefits makes the Elkhart Central High School community an exciting and opportunistic place to live.
